Day 22: The Choice

Sons are indeed a heritage from the Lord, children, a reward. (Ps. 127:3)

The Chinese couple had a choice to make. They were only allowed one child, and it looked like they were going to have a mentally handicapped son. Their doctors urged them to have an abortion. But their belief in Jesus and in the value of all human lives as God’s creation wouldn’t let them give in to the temptation to terminate the pregnancy. Though their hopes, like all parents, were for a healthy child, they knew if God was in control, He had a purpose even in this.

Ten years later I had the privilege of teaching that little boy. Not only were the doctors predictions wrong, but James was also a delight to his classmates and me. Class leader, star of school musicals, gifted pianist, straight-A student, and best of all, a tender and humble heart for Christ. Knowing his story, I took great joy in watching James thrive that year. He was a gift who would have never existed if his parents had listened to fear instead of trusting God.

Unlike James’s parents, many girls who get pregnant feel confused and helpless. Maybe they are young and unmarried. Possibly they haven’t finished school, or they have career plans. An abortion may be tempting, but the Bible teaches that God is the Author of life and He loves life (Matt. 22:32).

If you or someone you know may be unable to raise an unborn child, people on long waiting lists want to adopt. Women who face an unwanted pregnancy can get help and encouragement at a crisis pregnancy center. Ask the God who loves you and created all life to give courage to women who find themselves in difficult situations so their children can have a chance at a lifetime.
